Funkstile Riesling, Niederösterreich, Austria, 2022
Producer Overview
As the demand for Austrian wines continues to grow, so does our collection—starting with Grüner Veltliner, followed by Zweigelt, and now Funkstile, which encompasses a diverse range of wines including Riesling, a Skin Contact wine, and Blaufränkisch. This unique lineup showcases Austria’s most renowned grape varieties and distinctive styles, all wrapped in eye-catching packaging.
We’ve partnered with a 16th-generation family winery in Niederösterreich to create this vibrant collection. The winery follows sustainable practices, using homemade fertilisers made from grape skins, manure, and straw to enrich the soil and enhance the health of the vines.
The vineyards benefit from ideal growing conditions on southeast- and southwest-facing slopes, ensuring perfect ripening. Grapes are harvested early in the morning to preserve their acidity and pure fruit expression, then taken to their energy-efficient winery for vinification.
Viticulture
The winery produces its own fertilisers and seeds for cover crops, which help protect the vines. Straw from the fields is used in younger vineyards to prevent dry stress. Grapes are carefully hand and machine-harvested in the cool continental climate of Weinviertel, located in Niederösterreich.
The vineyards are planted on a mix of loess, clay, and granite soils, at altitudes ranging from 230 to 300 meters above sea level, with slopes between 10 and 40 degrees, oriented mainly south, southeast, and southwest.
Winemaking
The winery is energy-neutral, generating more energy than it consumes through its biogas plant and photovoltaic system. After being gently pressed, the grape must ferments in stainless steel tanks with selected yeasts for 15 to 25 days, with temperatures gradually rising towards the end of fermentation.
There is no malolactic fermentation, but the wine undergoes eight weeks of lees contact to develop its complexity. The wine is gently fined and cold stabilised.
Tasting Notes
This Riesling bursts with vibrant aromas of white peach, apricot compote, and delicate floral notes. On the palate, juicy ripe fruit is balanced by crisp, precise acidity that lingers on the finish.
Food Pairing
A wonderfully versatile Riesling, perfect with dishes like pasta, roast chicken, seabass, or fresh asparagus.
